About the event

With the help of IGI (Inter-Generational Impacts), the Bakes4Good and members of the Chinese senior association gathered over the weekend for a relaxed Lunar New Year conversation across generations. Both the kids and the elders brought foods connected to the holiday — rice cakes("NianGao"), pumpkin cakes, chilled sticky rice desserts, sugar cookies, candies, shrimp chips — filling the table. The conversation began with how these foods were made and slowly unfolded from there.

One senior spoke about working in Beijing years ago while his hometown faced shortages. One year he returned for the New Year carrying twenty-three bags of food — sugar, pork, salted fish — distributing them among relatives and neighbors. Another recalled childhood during the years of famine, when simply having enough to eat was uncertain; during the New Year several families would share a single cube of fermented tofu, and that small taste alone created the feeling…
